About Cellcius

Cellcius is an Eindhoven based startup founded in 2020 by TNO and TU/e and located at the TU/e campus. We are developing an innovative salt based heat battery that will play a crucial role in the energy transition. Our heat battery enables storage of waste heat (generated in data centers and industry) and use it again at a different time and location to heat houses and commercial buildings. We are currently in the system integration phase of our Minimum Viable Product, which has the size of a 20ft container. In 2024 we will develop the pilot version of this system, and install it at pilot customers from 2025 onwards. In parallel we enhance the properties of our salt on 12 KPI's for which we have a separate roadmap. We have a job opening for an experienced chemical designer to maintain and execute this roadmap.

Job Description.

We are looking for a talented, highly analytical and practical chemical designer with hands-on material design and test experience. The basic material used in our salt battery is chosen based on years of research executed at our founding fathers TNO and TU/e. Our material roadmap is executed either in close cooperation with them (TRL<5) or by Cellcius itself (TRL >5). Material enhancements are typically implemented by adding multiple additives to the basic material (for which our roadmap has different tracks) or designing specific production methods (for which we are also teaming up with external R&D partners to make use of existing facilities as much as possible). The successful candidate has at least 10 years experience in a similar role.


  • Maintain and execute the Cellcius material roadmap. Align this roadmap with CTO and system architects of the entire battery system
  • Based on your experience & creativity, literature studies, networking, research input etc. you design new material recipes and/or production methods and define how to validate your ideas in the Cellcius laboratory and in our pilot production heat battery systems
  • Managing that our salt material will comply and will be enhanced on multiple KPI's such as energy density, cost, manufacturability and recyclability
  • Daily management of the Cellcius materials team (chemical designers and lab assistants). You will build the team from 2 FTE to 6 FTE and grow into the role of future group leader of the Cellcius materials team.
  • Next to design activities, at the start of your assignment you carry out handson work in the lab during 20% of your time to get fully familiar with our technology
  • Maintain and extend cooperation with existing and potentially new partners for material recipe design and production methods
  • Setting up and maintaining a standardized materials way of working including lab safety and equipment maintenance for all material related work
  • Actively monitor external academic and industrial material R&D for salt based heat storage systems, share this information inside Cellcius and initiate follow up actions
  • Submit patent filings for material recipes and production methods to enhance existing IP position of Cellcius
  • Generation of project proposals to obtain R&D subsidies and grants
  • Coaching BSc and MSc internship and graduation students



  • TU or HBO chemical technology
  • A minimum of 10 years proven material design and test experience in a similar role of which 5 years in industry
  • At least 3 years of experience with development of manufacturing processes and setting up volume production for materials
  • Able to think and act at system level including technical alignment with system architects, and have attention to details as well
  • Experience with filing new patents and reviewing 3rd party patents to investigate potential Cellcius impact
  • Experience with obtaining R&D subsidies and grants via own creation of project proposals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and preferably English.
  • Able to work under time pressure and independently
  • You have a car driver license B and own transportation means. You will frequently travel to R&D and supply chain partners in Europe
